Simple Everyday Tips for the
Stress-Less-Life

Look at a picture to boost your mood
Hang a picture of something beautiful. When you are stuck inside or at your desk and your feeling a little gloom, take a moment to look at a picture of a garden or something beautiful - you will get a lift. Stimulating your brain through your visual cortex with sights that elicit positive feelings has shown to improve one's mood. Then focus on those feelings as you return to your tedium tasks. You will find that there is a lingering "lift" that can help you as you push onward.

Change your cell phone ring to something pleasant a harsh tone or a tone that may be unpleasantly excitable may only provoke agitation of the nervous system. So if you’re already stressed out, the unpleasant ring of a cell phone may only stress you out even more. Try a ring that actually soothes your mind. (have your kids help you, they know how)

Put off today what can be done tomorrow…(This applies to over-achievers) Many people often try to accomplish ‘just one more thing’ one more errand, only so much can be accomplished in one day. Don’t try to get everything done, do what needs to be done. If you can do this, you may find that you have a little more time for the things that are more important like helping and enjoying family, friends, and community.

Do what has to be done, (This applies to the lackadaisical who like to do as little as possible) as soon as possible. Procrastination is a constant stress source for those who live under a pile of old issues that have yet to be dealt with. Actually, procrastination, also stresses out those who live with the procrastinator, so there in is another source of stress, strained relationships. If you can take care of some thing immediately, you will feel a greater sense of accomplishment, and that feels good.

Eat slowly, meal time is a transition time. The body transitions between fight and flight and rest and digest. Eating slowly allows you time to fully experience rest and digest. In addition you will fill up quicker, you’ll eat less, and you actually enjoy what ever it is you’re eating which will fill you with a greater sense of satisfaction. More than that, if you give yourself this much needed time of rest, you will perform better afterwards.

Drink water. Water is the basis for all metabolic activities. Our entire human body functions as it does because of billions of different metabolic reactions. Every thing slows down when there is no fluid. I liken the human body to a river, or a system of rivers with many channels. When the water flow slows down the river will become more like a swamp. When we become dehydrated, our body becomes like the swampy river. Oxygen is depleted, bacteria and micro organisms flourish and we develop, ‘dis-ease’. Not to mention, if you suffer from pain or muscular disease, hydration is even more important

Let go of rigid concepts about what should be, how things are supposed to happen, or how you want it. Approach life’s challenges with the game player’s mentality, or a "problem solving mentality". In fact it is known that the most successful people in the world often treat life this way. Value the small things; take lightly the “important things”.

Smile even if you don't feel like it, it may  take more or less energy to smile, but that does not matter. The action of using the "smiling muscles", for some, will actually trigger a proprioceptive neuromuscular response that subsequently tells the brain, you're happy, then you actually feel happy. Don't believe it, try and see next time you feel a little down or lack luster. here is some more info on smiles
