Massage after surgery should be a strong consideration. Although every surgical procedure is as unique as the individual themselves, the mechanisms and systemic changes that contribute to a full healthy recovery are the same for all people.

Yes you are going to look great in a few months, but how do you reduce the chances of improper healing of the surgical site? Although surgeons will tell you that most people recover well, there are some folks that are not so lucky; ending up with excess scar tissue, fatty necrosis or other conditions associated with poor circulation.
Massage may help you in the recovery process; reducing cellular necrosis due to poor circulation, relaxing tight muscles which inhibit the healing process, and reducing local swelling in the adjacent soft tissue structures.
Any and all surgical procedures will cause disruptive changes in the lymphatic and vascular tissue. Yet good circulation is the corner stone of a speedy and full recovery. This poses a dilemma for the body; while the body needs a functional lymphatic and vascular system to recover, it now needs to mend these systems whilst trying to heal the skin and subdermal layers as well, so that you look good (this is the part you care about).
This is where we believe that massage is very useful. Local massage given at the appropriate time seems to reduce local swelling, relax muscles that may be hypertonic (to tight) and stimulate cellular activity. Your body has an amazing capacity to reorganize and recover at the cellular level, massage simply helps push along this process. Enabling the body to expel old damaged cells while ushering in new healthy cells. It does this by forcing the body to process / exchange fluids via blood vessels and lymphatic tissue. This increased blood / lymph flow allows the body to increase cellular activity.
Since most disruptive conditions that arise during recovery are often the result of poor circulation and dysfunction, it seems that many of our clients who utilize massage, recovery quickly with fewer occurrences arising from the aforementioned issues.
Conditions such as fatty necrosis, pain and limited ROM are reduced when massage is applied after such conditions have already set in.
Prevention is hard to measure, to quantify preventative benefits is impossible, yet the basic knowledge and understanding of anatomy, physiology and the functioning human body is irrefutable. So simple logic seems to indicate, Don't wait until you develop problems in your recovery, help your body heal quickly and properly.
Additional tips for a good recovery:
- eat healthy natural foods
- respect your temporary limits (when you recover fully you can get back to your routine)
- sleep enough (if you are a regular night owl, try to refrain during this recovery time, sleep will also help prevent problems and heal)
- avoid empty sugar calories
- Do what your operating doctor is advising

"I first came to Above All Massage for post-surgical pain, after an operation to remove a very large benign tumor from my thigh. I was barely able to walk, and therefore could not exercise. As I am normally quite active, I was also hoping for some passive muscle toning until I could get my strength back.
James' work on my sore muscles exceeded my wildest expectations. For one thing, I discovered that what I had thought was arthritis was merely knotted muscles. I felt so much better after the first session that I made the massages a weekly event, and have abandoned nearly all of the arthritis medication I had been taking.
I intend to stay with the weekly massages to keep myself limber."
